Wesley Snipes Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Tax-Fraud Charges

OCALA, Fla. — Wesley Snipes was released on $1 million bond Friday after pleading not guilty to federal charges that he failed to file tax returns and falsely claimed millions of dollars in refunds.

Snipes appeared two months after he was indicted in central Florida, and then promptly left for the African nation of Namibia to finish filming a cowboy movie. U.S. Magistrate Gary Jones gave him until Jan. 10 to return to his home in Marina del Rey, Calif., when Snipes will have to surrender his passport.

"I look forward to clearing my name and resolving this issue post haste," Snipes said, wearing blue tinted glasses and a suit. "Thank you to all my fans, thank you for all the support from my family, and to my foes, thank you very much as well."

The actor known for films such as the "Blade" trilogy, "Major League" and "Jungle Fever" did not speak during his court appearance in Ocala.

He appeared with three attorneys before departing again for Africa to finish the movie "Gallow Walker." They insisted Snipes was never a fugitive, and said they have been working for weeks with U.S. government officials to respond to the charges.

Snipes, 44, was charged in October with fraudulently claiming refunds totaling nearly $12 million in 1996 and 1997 on income taxes already paid. He was also charged with failure to file returns from 1999 through 2004. If convicted, he faces up to 16 years in prison.

"We believe the evidence in the case will show he has been the victim of unscrupulous tax advice," said Billy Martin, Snipes' lawyer.

Two men were indicted along with Snipes -- Eddie Ray Kahn and Douglas P. Rosile Sr. -- on conspiracy-to-defraud charges.

According to the indictment, Snipes had his taxes prepared by accountants with a history of filing false returns to reap payments for clients. The firm American Rights Litigators would receive 20 percent of refunds from clients, according to the indictment.

"Gallow Walker" will be completed next week and be released sometime next fall, said Ian Thompson, spokesman for Sheer Films, which is producing the movie. Snipes' arrest is not expected to delay production, Thompson said.

Martin said Snipes left the United States to film the movie long before the indictment.

"We want to make it clear that he did not avoid returning to the United States. He's always been ready to return," Martin said.

Myleene bikini auction raises Ј7,000

The online auction of I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! runner-up Myleene Klass' bikini has raised £7,000 for the victims of collapsed Christmas savings firm Farepak.

Sexy Myleene, who adopted a policy of a shower every hour in the jungle, had originally hoped her two-piece would fetch about £3,000 on website eBay.

But following a flurry of late bids, when the auction closed at 22:00 GMT last night the generous user known only as herbiesure was able to get his or her hands on the famous bikini.

More than 150,000 people lost an average of £400 following the collapse of Farepak, an event which the former Hear'Say singer dubbed "despicable and evil".

"So if selling my little bikini can bring so much joy then that is amazing," she said.

It is thought that the £7,000 will go towards almost 20,000 Christmas hampers from the Farepak relief fund.

Jennifer pregnant again?

Jennifer Connelly is reportedly pregnant with her second child.

The actress and wife of 'The Da Vinci Code' actor Paul Bettany has sent rumours swirling that she is expecting her third child.

She has been spotted showing off a rounder than usual tummy while promoting her latest film 'Blood Diamond'.

Jennifer already has a nine-year-old son, Kai, with former partner David Dugan, a photographer.

She also has a three-year-old son named Stellan with hubby Paul.

Stellan almost got his dad into trouble with the law when the two were travelling from France recently.

Gwen Stefani's scent of success

It is a big week for singer Gwen Stefani.

Not only has she released her second solo album, 'The Sweet Escape', on Monday, but she has also announced that she will be launching her own fragrance next year.

The 'Hollaback Girl' will be teaming up with cosmetics giant Coty to create a line of perfumes under her own L.A.M.B. label.

'Creating a fragrance is one of the most prestigious things a designer can do,' Gwen said about her upcoming venture. 'For me it's like another thing you can wear and another thing I can creatively be a part of.'

The perfume is as yet unnamed, but it is expected to be out on the shelves next autumn.

Coty CEO Bernd Beetz was full of praise for the singer. He said: 'Gwen's distinctive look, music and embrace of ethnic influences, coupled with her effervescent personality, will make her fragrances highly appealing to a generation of women around the world who love her one-of-a-kind, international style.'

Catherine Walsh of the company's US fragrances division said the perfume will be in line with Gwen's L.A.M.B. range of fashions.

'This will be no ordinary perfume,' she said. 'From the packaging to the bottle design to the distinctive scent itself, we will be working very closely with Gwen to ensure that her signature fragrance captures her rare spirit, style and warmth.'

The announcement of her Coty pairing comes at the end of an eventful year for the singer.

Gwen and hubby Gavin Rossdale welcomed their first child this year. Baby Kingston James McGregor was born this May.

The Sun UK declared today what the rest of the world already knew: Victoria Beckham (AKA Posh Spice) had a boob job. But High Court documents say she has admitted having breast surgery.

Victoria’s spokesman did not deny it, saying: “The legal papers are no secret but Victoria has nothing to say.”

And Posh, above right looking swell this year, was furious when pin-up Jordan, who has had FIVE boob ops, said she knew she had had surgery.

Rebecca Loos, 27, alleged ex-mistress of Victoria’s hubby David, 30, made the same claim.

She said: “She told me she’s had them done three times.”

The legal document is in a newspaper’s evidence for a libel case brought by the Beckhams and due to be heard next month.

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT IS DUMB

I actually saw her talking about this on the Tonight Show last week, but now it’s in the paper so I’ll post it here. Jennifer Love Hewitt apparently can’t tell the difference between when a gas station attendant does and doesn’t actually put gas in her car. She wound up running out of gas on Robertson Boulevard in LA. Here’s how she explains it.

“I was on a very important conference call and I was in a dress so I thought, ‘I’ll let someone else put the gas in the car today.’ I never do that.

“I gave him $40 and I drove away. It never dawned on me to check he’d actually put the gas in the car. He pocketed my $40, never put gas in the car and I get to Robertson, the one street filled with paparazzi and I’m like: ‘Oh, it’s not going… This is not funny.’

“I had to get out and I started pushing my Mini Cooper down the street. Thank God I don’t drive an SUV or something.

“People got out and they helped me, with the paparazzi shooting photos. It was incredibly embarrassing. A paparazzi actually helped me go get gas for my car, so they’re not all bad.”

Paparazzi are sweet. “Love” made it a point to indicate that she usually pumps her own gas, which I guess is a big deal or something. I live in New Jersey and all gas stations here are full serve by law. It’s apparently illegal to pump your own gas here, what with the propensity for women with their big Jersey hair to get discombobulated and start pumping gas into all manner of orifice other than the gas tank itself.
